Research highlights: Finding that emotional and irritant tears were chemically different and discovering that there were also differences in tear composition between men's and women's tears. This eventually led to the discovery that human tears contain the hormone prolactin. That finding paved the way for important research on tear secretion and its relation to dry eye and its many variants. He also published an important paper, a description of the impression cytology technique, a non-invasive alternative to biopsy or harvest cells for microscopic study.
Research interests/expertise: Dry eye, artificial tears, difficult problems involving the cornea, conjunctiva, and eyelids.
