Preparedness of Minnesota Emergency Departments for a Mass Casualty Incident

Dr. Joseph Madigan from the Emergency Medicine Department at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN is conducting a research study to learn more about the level of preparedness of emergency departments and physicians handling mass casualty incidents.  From review of the literature there appears to be some sense that this situation may have improved somewhat since the events of 9/11, but we do not know for certain.  We are using a survey for our research sending it to physicians of emergency departments throughout Minnesota.

You are receiving this survey because you are a member of the Association of Certified Emergency Personnel (ACEP) and were selected at random to receive this survey.

Your participation in this research involves filling out a survey which should take approximately 5 minutes.  Your consent to be in this study is implied if you return a completed survey in the stamped envelope provided.  You are free to skip any question you don’t wish to answer.  Returning the survey is entirely voluntary; you may participate or stop at any time.  Your decision will not affect your standing with the ACEP, the researchers or your employment.

You will not benefit directly by participating in our survey.  We hope to learn more about preparedness of emergency departments in Minnesota.

The risks to you for participating in this study relate to confidentiality.  In order for us to receive the greatest response, we have coded the forms so that we can do a second mailing to those who do not respond with this mailing.  There will only be one follow up mailing.  Your responses will not be used to identify you nor will any presentation or publication include any information that could identify you.

Your participation in our research is important to the success of our study.  We appreciate your time in helping us with our research.  If you have any questions about this survey, you can reach Dr. Madigan at 651-254-3666.

Thank you.
