Alain F. Broccard, MD Medical Director, Medical Intensive care Unit, Department of Pulmonary
and Critical Care Medicine Regions Hospital, St Paul
Chair combined Critical Care Committee, Regions Hospital Saint Paul
Professor of Medicine, University of Minnesota
Research Interests
My current research program
focuses on three areas:
Development of decision
support system (neural network) for the care of critically ill in partnership
with expert from other institutions (Dr J Hotchkiss at the University
of Pittsburg).
Clinical Interest:
I am interested in the use of new monitoring devise to approach frequently
encounter clinical issues related to weaning and heart-lung interactions.
For instance, we are currently focusing our attention on the impact
of left heart systolic and/or diastolic dysfunction on weaning, on the
metabolism of respiratory muscle during weaning and on the early detection
of instability of patients throughout the hospital (outside the ICU)
and have developed partnership with the industry that supports our effort.
I am also interested in studying how changing the care model may impact
patients'outcome.
Experimental interest:
My main focus is ventilator-induced lung injury using both an isolated
perfused heart lung model and an intact rabbit model. I am particularly
interested in how the hemodynamic, CO2, NO, apoptosis and other non
ventilatory factor modulates VILI. This is currently supported by a
grant from the Healthpartners research foundation.
